It’s a straightforward game with a lot of laughs, brain-wracking puzzles, and a lot of wonderful one-liners. Positive Themes: The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition proves that a good game with clean humor, minimal violence, and absolutely no political backhanding can exist. It’s there, but it’s definitely not glorified. The drink in question, “grog”, is so toxic that it eats through the tankards. The insults are clever, free of profanity and crude imagery. Language/Crude Humor: The language is surprisingly tame for a pirate adventure. It’s easy to miss, but it can be a little unsettling if triggered. The most graphic thing within the game is a drowning scene that only happens if you spend ten minutes idling at one point of the game. The worst scenes are the kind seen in classic Looney Toon cartoons. Violence: The animated violence of the game really isn’t anything shocking. On the lighter side of things, there is a church present on Mele island, hinting to some sort of spirituality. Defeating the undead evil of the world is obviously the point of the game, but there’s no spiritual significance to it. Neither are glorified and the undead characters are clearly evil. Straight-forward as it is, the story is fantastic and takes many unexpected turns. Between Guybrush and LeChuck stands cannibals, three-headed monkeys, and a hilariously awkward romance. The high seas adventure leads Guybrush to the fabled Monkey Island where he meets LeChuck, the antagonist the game series. The story takes a surprising turn following Guybrush’s successful completion of the trials and he is forced to set out on a ship of his own with a crew of his own choosing. He must learn the basics from a trainer and gather a variety of insults and their corresponding comebacks before he is ready to challenge sword the master of Mele Island. For example, sword fighting is not as simple as swinging steel back and forth, but instead consists of both sword play and insults paired with the proper comebacks. From here, Guybrush must complete each of the three trials, though each of them is far from what he (and the player) expects of them. Guybrush is informed that in order to become a proper pirate, he must pass the three trials: treasure hunting, sword fighting, and thieving. Guybrush does as he’s told, and after wading through a sea of unsavory characters within the SCUM Bar, he speaks with the three “important-looking” pirates enjoying a few good laughs over their tankards of grog. This dialogue is delivered to an apparently easy to sneak on elderly lookout who instructs Guybrush to speak with the pirate leaders hanging out in the local bar.
